50 Years Together

What started fifty years ago
as a young and tender love,
has grown into a family so blessed
by our wonderful God from above.

You started with my mother
and Lala, her identical twin.
After years of your love, they married
then your family started to grow again.

Derinda was your first grandchild,
born to Loretta on a November day.
Then it wasn’t long until Venetta
showed her beautiful son Duray

Third was a girl called Henri,
fourth and fifth called Daphney and DeVoe.
I’ll bet you began to wonder
if this process was ever going to slow!

More years passed and you loved us,
helping us always through thin and thick.
1973 brought your first great-grandchild
whom Derinda named Justin Marick.

Kenna and Jeff came next,
followed by Stephen and Amanda Beth.
Josh and Micah and Jacob,
then baby Lauren took her first breath.

From Jady and Mary Webster
this family grows more everyday.
It seems that God has blessed you again,
for now there’s another life on the way.

You’ve loved and nurtured us equally,
shared our pain and our tears.
You’ve celebrated the battles we’ve mastered,
been with us all, through the years.

You’ve given us our lives and our futures,
and from our souls you will never part.
I thank you, Mama and Grandaddy,
and I love you both with all of my heart.

I wrote this poem and read it to my grandparents at their 50th wedding anniversary. Since that time - our family has lost both of them in body but there is not a moment that they do not live in our hearts. I miss you Mama and Grandaddy…soooo much.
